HOW TO STYLISHLY DIVIDE A ROOM?

Space is always an issue for New York City residents. Not only is there a serious lack of it, but these tight NY homes can also be quite awkward in size and shape. Thankfully, dividing these unusual spaces can be easy. Here are a few designs where book shelves, screens and room dividers are used to make better use of your home.

NYC is full of studio apartments. These spaces, as you may know, are hard to design so that guests can come and well…not be bombarded with the privacy of your bedroom. The design here is a simple track with a curtain that glides around the entire bed making it easy to hide. This idea creates a living room space while the bed is kept clandestine.

Another great way to divide the room but not block the fluidity of space is by arranging intriguing accessories along an open book shelf. The design aids in separating the space but not segmenting it with something solid. This dark stained wood shelf acts as a center piece to the room by contracting with its overall grey hue.

The obvious attraction in this room with the brawny thick framed fireplace. Isolating such a center-piece would not be in the best interest of the home owner.  By having this transparent bamboo screen dividing the room, the fireplace can be seen and enjoyed in the dining and living room.

Having a foyer in NYC is an expensive luxury. Creating the idea of an entrance room is done here with a floor to ceiling book shelf. A decorative bowl is added to collect keys and help keep you organized.

Privacy is crucial in the design of a public washroom. By including thick stainless steel pipes to divide the sinks with the water closet, the patron feels concealment but also can appreciate the open construction of the space.

Oriental Screens have been around for hundreds of years and for good reason. These light, rattan and bamboo room dividers let light pass through them but block sight and sound.

Hand-made oriental screens have a significant presence in any room. Here, this black four-paneled screen divides the dining room from the kitchen entrance but also ‘furnishes’ a good conversation piece!
