Your Bathroom Renovation Guide

Renovating your bathroom can be very daunting.  There are many things that must be decided upon – such as the budget, product selection, floor plan and color scheme.  The following is a checklist to ensure your bathroom renovation runs smoothly:

Inspiration – About six months before the actual desired renovation date, you want to begin looking at images to help you get visuals on what you want your bathroom to look like.  You can begin by looking at magazine, catalogues and websites such as Houzz.

Floor Plan – Again, about six months out, you want to begin formulating and thinking about your ideal floor plan.  Pay careful attention to how you use your space.  List out the pros and cons of how things currently are and figure out what you want to keep and change.  Take note on where the plumbing is and see if changing the location of any pipes is worth the additional cost.

Budget – According to the NKBA (National Kitchen and Bath Association) the average person will roughly spend about $11,000 in renovating their bathroom.  Figure out your renovation bathroom by getting a clearer sense of what you would like in your bathroom; tiles, fixtures etc.

Contractor – It is always a good idea to hire a licensed contractor.  Share your idea, drawings with the contractor to make sure it is all feasible.  The contractor should be able to commit to a start date.  They should also be able to provide a clear timeline of what their material needs will be and give you an estimate on when the project will be complete.  The average time for a bathroom renovation is roughly six weeks.  Be sure to have a signed contract before any work begins!

Purchase Tiles and Fixtures: You will want to purchase these about two months before the renovation start date. Fulfillment of these items can take anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks, depending on whether something is custom ordered.

Paint Color and Accessories – You will want to select your paint color and shop for accessories about 1 month out.

It is always good to be flexible when undertaking a huge project such as a bathroom renovation.  Be prepared by understanding that things may not go exactly as planned, but know that it will all work out in the end.
